  1. Step 1 of 5: See if you qualify

    • Kids under 13 (under 18 special needs)
    • You live in Virginia
    • You work, study, or look for work
  2. Step 2 of 5: Get your papers ready

    Missing papers cause delays

    • Child's birth certificate
    • Child's shot records
    • Last 4 pay stubs
    • Bill or lease with your VA address
    Important: Incomplete applications are the top reason for delays and denials.
    Good to know: Families without a home may get temporary 90-day approval while gathering papers.
  3. Step 3 of 5: Apply online or on paper

  4. Step 4 of 5: Interview and wait

    Answer within 30 days

    • You may have an interview
    • Review takes up to 30 days
    • Answer comes in writing
    Important: Since July 1, 2024, many areas in Virginia have waitlists.
    Don't miss: If denied, you have 30 days from the notice date to appeal.
  5. Step 5 of 5: Pick a provider and start

    Don't miss: Report changes to income, job, school, provider, or household within 10 days.
    Good to know: Once approved, benefits usually last 12 months. Your family is on its way!
