  1. Step 1 of 5: See if you qualify

    Who comes first

    • Child is 3 to 5
    • Families who meet income guidelines first
    • Special needs counts too
    Good to know: Your child may qualify because of special needs or learning challenges, not just income.
  2. Step 2 of 5: Get your papers ready

    Gather these first

    • Child's birth certificate
    • Proof of where you live
    • Proof of your money (if asked)
    • Shot and health records
    Important: Use current, correct papers to avoid delays. Some districts ask for extra papers.
  3. Step 3 of 5: Apply through your district

    Each district runs its own

    • Contact your school district
    • Apply online, mail, or in person
    • Call ISBE 217-782-4321

  4. Step 4 of 5: Wait for your answer

    The district reviews it

    • Hear back in 1-2 weeks
    • Enrollment letter comes to you
  5. Step 5 of 5: Start preschool

    Your child begins

    • Ask about bus rides
