What is the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)?
The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is Michigan’s state-funded free preschool program for eligible four-year-olds. GSRP is designed to prepare children for kindergarten through hands-on, play-based learning in safe and supportive classroom settings. The program focuses on building early literacy, math, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills. It’s available at no cost to qualifying families through public schools, private providers, and community-based organizations.
How do I apply for GSRP?
Online: Start by visiting the GSRP program page to find a program in your area. Each program is managed by a local Intermediate School District (ISD) or other authorized provider.
In person or by mail: Contact your local ISD or GSRP provider directly for instructions on how to request, complete, and submit an application.
Referral process: Families at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level must first be referred to Head Start. If a Head Start seat is not available, your child may be placed in a GSRP program.
How long does it take to receive approval?
Once your application is submitted with all required documents, processing time varies depending on program availability and eligibility prioritization. Many families are notified within several weeks, especially before the school year starts. If applying mid-year, placement depends on space availability.
What do the application steps look like?
Visit the GSRP program page and use the “Find a program near you” tool to connect with your local ISD or provider.
Request or access the GSRP application through your ISD or provider.
Complete the application and gather required documents.
If your family income is at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level, your ISD will refer you to Head Start first. If no Head Start seat is available, your child may then be placed in GSRP.
Submit your completed application and documents according to your provider’s instructions.
The program will notify you about enrollment or waitlist status.
If accepted, your child will begin attending based on the program’s calendar (part-day or full-day options available).
What documentation is required when I fill out my application?
Age & Residency
Certified birth certificate (child must be 4 on or before September 1; some programs may allow children turning 4 by December 1)
Proof of Michigan residency (such as a lease, utility bill, or government-issued ID)
Household Income
Proof of income for all adults in the household (paystubs, tax returns, benefit award letters)
Additional Priority Indicators (if applicable)
Documentation of foster care, homelessness, IEP status, or other qualifying situations
Head Start Referral Documentation
If required based on income
