  1. Step 1 of 5: See if you qualify

    • Income up to 300% of poverty
    • Child is a citizen or legal resident
    Good to know: Once approved, you keep benefits even if your income grows, up to 85% of DC Median Income ($134,160 for a family of four).
  2. Step 2 of 5: Get your papers ready

    • Child's birth certificate
    • Proof of your money
    • Proof of work or school
    • Proof of your home
    Important: If papers are missing, you get 30 days to send them in.
  3. Step 3 of 5: Apply your way

    Online is easiest

    Good to know: Applying online or at DHS lets you pick more than one provider.
  4. Step 4 of 5: Wait for your answer

    • Worker reviews your case
    • Watch for your decision
    Good to know: If you are denied, the letter tells you how to appeal.
  5. Step 5 of 5: Start your child care

    Good to know: The program pays your provider directly. You may pay a small monthly co-payment based on your income. Welcome!
    Important: Some providers offer care during non-traditional hours, and in-home babysitters are allowed as of October 1, 2024.
