  1. Step 1 of 6: See if your family fits

    • Get or got CalWORKs cash aid
    • Working or in an approved activity
    • Child is 12 or younger
    Good to know: Teens in the Cal-Learn program qualify too. Kids with special needs can be covered up to age 21.
  2. Step 2 of 6: Contact your county office

  3. Step 3 of 6: Get your papers ready

    • ID or tribal enrollment card
    • Pay stubs or proof of money
    • Child's birth certificate
    • Proof of where you live
  4. Step 4 of 6: Turn in your application

    • Fill out the forms
    • Add your provider details
    • Submit to the county
  5. Step 5 of 6: Wait for your answer

    • County checks your application
    • You get the decision
    Important: Processing time varies by county. Waiting lists may apply.
  6. Step 6 of 6: Pick your child care

    • Help choosing a provider
    • Centers, preschools, or relatives
    Good to know: You can change providers later — just let them know first.
