How to access, complete, and submit an application to Transitional Kindergarten in California.
What is the Transitional Kindergarten program?
Transitional kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a developmentally and age-appropriate modified kindergarten curriculum. TK does not replicate preschool or kindergarten. It addresses the child’s language, literacy, and pre-math skills with an emphasis on social and emotional development. The program blends preschool and readiness standards for kindergarten with a focus on hands-on and experiential learning.
Research shows that taking the time for readiness for school can predict success later in the formative years of elementary and secondary education. Getting a strong start is very important.
How do I apply for the Transitional Kindergarten program?
The application process for TK is managed by your local school district. You’ll need to call them directly to pick up an application or register with the online application portal. Your child needs to turn 4 by September 1 of the year they are enrolled in order to apply. Your school district will know the specific enrollment window and application deadline.
If you miss the application deadline, you can apply outside of the main round to any schools with open seats.
When will I know the results of my application?
You will know the results of your school assignment by the end of March prior to the start of school.

Are there immunizations required for my child to attend Transitional Kindergarten?
Children need immunizations prior to the first day of Transitional Kindergarten (TK), which is considered the first-year of a two-year Kindergarten program. Please visit the California Department of Public Health web page to view required immunizations for TK students.
Does my child need to be potty-trained in order to attend Transitional Kindergarten?
In short: No.
A school district, county office of education, or charter school must offer transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten classes for all age-eligible children to attend, regardless of their toilet training status. Local educational agencies can decide how to address the needs of a non-toilet-trained age-eligible TK student to ensure they are able to attend TK and kindergarten classes. If the child has an individualized education program (IEP), accommodations should be addressed in the IEP meeting.
