  1. Step 1 of 6: See if your child fits

    For kids under 3 in California

    • Child is under 3
    • Lives in California
    • Slow in talking, moving, or learning
    Good to know: There are no income limits, and your immigration status does not matter.
  2. Step 2 of 6: Contact a Regional Center

    Anyone can ask for help

    Good to know: Help is available in many languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese.
  3. Step 3 of 6: Get your papers ready

    • Child's birth certificate
    • Proof you live in California
    • Your ID
    • Doctor records, if you have them
  4. Step 4 of 6: Do the evaluation

    A team checks how your child is growing

    • A coordinator calls you
    • Child gets checked
    • Done within 45 days
    Good to know: The check-up and evaluation are free for your family.
    Important: Answer your Service Coordinator's calls and requests quickly so things don't get delayed.
  5. Step 5 of 6: Make the family plan

    The IFSP meeting

    • Meet the team
    • Sign the plan
    • Services start soon after
    Important: If your child is found not eligible, you can ask for mediation, a hearing, or file a complaint.
  6. Step 6 of 6: Your child gets help

    • Speech and movement therapy
    • Family support
    • At age 3, moves to preschool help
    Good to know: No family is turned away because they cannot pay.
    Important: Tell your coordinator right away if your address, phone, custody, or child's diagnosis changes.
