  1. Step 1 of 6: See if your family fits

    One income rule plus one need rule

    • Meet income guidelines or on Medi-Cal, WIC...
    • Working, in school, or job hunting
    • Child is 12 or younger
    Good to know: Your child's immigration status does not block help.
    Good to know: For a family of three, the income limit is about $89,659 a year.
  2. Step 2 of 6: Find your local agency

    Called a Resource & Referral agency

    Good to know: The hotline helps in English and Spanish.
  3. Step 3 of 6: Get on the list

    • Ask to join the eligibility list
    • Fill out the application
    Important: There are waiting lists. Kids needing protection come first, then the lowest-income families.
  4. Step 4 of 6: Send your papers

    • Pay stubs or proof of money
    • Benefits letters (Medi-Cal, CalFresh)
    • Birth certificates
    • Proof of where you live
    Important: If it applies: work or school proof, doctor's note, shot records, IEP, or court orders.
  5. Step 5 of 6: Wait for a paid spot

    • Agency calls when a spot opens
    • Pick your provider: center, home, or family
    Don't miss: CAPP does not pay private school tuition for grades K-12.
  6. Step 6 of 6: Start your child care

    • Program pays the provider directly
    • You may pay a small fee based on income
    Good to know: Families under 75% of state median income pay no fee. CalWORKs families pay nothing.
    Important: Report changes in income, family size, job, provider, or address right away.
